Dispensing for the High Brightness LED Industry
Dispensing equipment from Asymtek can perform a wide variety of dispensing for manufacturing LED devices. Jetting technology, pioneered by Asymtek, offers several advantages over traditional needle-based dispensing. In some cases, only jetting can perform the operation, making it an enabling technology.
Phosphor dispersions in silicone represent a particular challenge, because of the very short pot life and the tendency of the phosphor to settle. Asymtek has partnered with fluid suppliers to provide a solution to this application and several others specific to the thermal and optical requirements of advanced LED manufacturing. Asymtek’s Mass Flow Calibration is particularly beneficial for dispensing fluids with short pot lives.
Asymtek equipment performs these applications during LED assembly today:
- Underfill
- Thermally conductive adhesive
- Conformal Coating (using traditional materials for environmental protection as well as for anti-reflective coatings)
- Silicone and epoxy encapsulation
- Flux jetting
- Solder paste dispensing
- Die bonding and lead-free interconnection
Some features of jet dispensing:
- Jetting is non-contact. The jet flies over the surface of the LED device, shooting dots without touching.
- Jetting is fast: 200 dot/sec, up to 2000 μl/sec.
- Dot sizes range from 1 nanoliter to 1 milliliter
- Weight-controlled dots can be deposited with the Calibrated Process Jetting feature
- Jets can dispense where needles cannot – with a 100 μm stream, the jet shoots fluid into tight spaces within the LED device.
