Application Note

Adhesives & Fluids

 

SMA Applications

The throughput information was obtained by performing demonstrations for various customers as well as standard run tests. Materials used in these demonstrations include:

  • Loctite 3609
  • Loctite 348
  • Loctite 368
  • Loctite 360
  • Grace D-124F
  • Grace D-125F
  • Heraeus PD 911

The accuracy data was obtained by dispensing and measuring dots on a sample PCB. This is currently one of the production tests for all 600 systems to confirm the accuracy prior to shipment.

Facts

Software:

Fluidmove can achieve a dot rate of 18,000 dots per hour with the following conditions:

  • Dispensing time ONLY (No fiducials or conveyor)
  • Spacing in the X and Y direction is 0.050 inches
  • Z axis retract distance of 0.100 inches
  • Only one dot size with a total time of 0.060 seconds
  • Height sensing on each dot
  • Fast dot option is enabled
  • Program executed from DOWNLOAD

If the same program is executed while running from the computer, the overall throughput will decrease to 16,000 dots per hour. Typical application ranges of dispense time ONLY is in the 12 to 15,000 range on downloaded programs. If running from the computer, this range decreases to 10 to 13,000 dots per hour. Fiducial times range for various applications:

  • 4 to 6 seconds (Cognex will not make this go significantly faster)

Conveyor times range for various applications:

  • 2 to 4 seconds IF the Pre-Que options is used.

HT-1000 with an HT-10 are required to provide quality dispensing of heat cure adhesives:

  • Loctite 3609, 348, 368
  • Grace D-124F, D-125F
  • Heraeus PD911

A DV-06 is required to support the same fluids.
A DV-06D is required for UV Cure adhesives with no needle heating:

  • Loctite 360

Absolute accuracy of the dot placement is + or - 0.005 inches at 3 sigma.

Opinions:

  • A 23GA EFD needle is preferred to allow dispensing on 0805 components doing dots of 0.025 to 0.030 inches.
  • Plastic hub needles are better to prevent heat transfer to the valve.
  • Loctite 3609 has better wetting characteristics than the predecessor materials 348 and 368.
  • D-124F has better wetting characteristics than Loctite 3609 which reduces dwell times, subsequently resulting in higher throughput rates.
  • DV-06Ds may work with some heat cure materials.
  • 0.025 inch diameter dots are the smallest consistently achievable dots.

Encapsulation Applications

Facts

  • Fluidmove software can easily apply encapsulation materials. Version 3.1C and above have enhanced programming capability with built in circular and rectangular spiral fill patterns.
  • The DV-06, DV-02 and DV-01 have successfully been used to dispense the different encapsulation materials. The DV-06 has been selected for most applications.
  • The abrasive nature of the encapsulation materials will cause wear on the feedscrew of the DV-06. Continued exchanges of the valve through Asymtek will be required. Frequency of the exchange is dependent upon the production volume with each customer.
  • Dripless follower plungers for the syringes of material are required to prevent drooling issues when the valve is off.
  • Typical dispensing velocities range from .75 IPS to 1.5 IPS.
  • The needle heater is required to ensure consistent volumetric dispensing and to ensure proper wetting action occurs during the dispensing process.
  • Heating the substrate is also recommended to ensure proper wetting action occurs during the dispensing process.
  • Absolute accuracy for dispense placement is + or - 0.005 inches at 3 sigma.

Silver Epoxy Applications

The throughput information was obtained by performing demonstrations for various customers as well as standard run tests. The accuracy data was obtained by dispensing and measuring dots on a sample PCB. This is the same data obtained for the SMA Applications and is currently one of the production tests for all 600 systems to confirm the accuracy prior to shipment.

Opinions:

The debate resides around which valve is "best" for silver epoxy. Both the DV-01 and DV-06 are successfully dispensing consistent dots and lines of epoxy in production. Some believe positive displacement is required to maintain consistent dots; however, run tests with the DV-01 disprove this theory. Others believe the DV-01 is better as the maintenance and operating costs of the DV-01 are much lower than the DV-06.

Facts

  • Software:
    Continuous path programming supported by all versions of Fluidmove is required when performing an application of this type. Fluidmove also provides different programming options to neaten the start and end point of the gasket.
  • Dispensing speeds usually do not exceed 3 IPS at 100 PSI of fluid pressure. Throughput also depends on the fluid delivery system. A pail pump system or a direct cartridge mount to the valve will provide the fastest dispense times. Remote cartridge feeding of the material will result in increased dispensing times per part and reduce the overall throughput.
  • Cone tip needles or Semco nozzles will also increase the flow rate of the material and reduce overall dispensing times.
  • Automove systems require Firmware revisions 3.0 or higher to support the continuous path programming.
  • The DV-03 is recommended for medium to high viscosity Silicone RTVs.
  • The DV-05A is recommended for low to medium viscosity or self-leveling RTVs.
  • The DV-08 is recommended for anaerobic flange sealants.
  • The DV-06 can be used for precision gaskets using a silicone RTV.
  • Absolute accuracy for dispense placement is + or - 0.005 inches at 3 sigma.

Opinions:

Forward Tracking is a preferred method of mating the start point to the end point without fluid peaking issues.
