Dispensing Tip

Choosing the Best Syringe Followers
for Fluids Over 5000 cps

Syringe followers, also referred to as plungers, are placed inside the syringe on top of the fluid. They serve several purposes: prevent moisture and air from mixing with the fluid, protect from spillage, and ensure efficient fluid use by wiping it from the syringe wall when dispensing. Choosing the proper syringe follower is key to protecting the fluid, improving the performance of the dispensing system and ensuring a high degree of accuracy.

Based on our experience, we recommend these followers for precise automated dispensing of fluids over 5 kcps in viscosity:

  • EFD Orange (smooth wall): Recommended for most automated dispensing applications. They work well with Asymtek’s syringe-fed valves.

The follower’s straight sides allow material to flow smoothly. To ensure a good seal, we recommend pushing the follower firmly into the fluid and maintaining a vertical position. The minute amount of fluid trapped between the follower and syringe wall creates an air seal.

  • Semco No Draft: Based on tests performed, Asymtek’s Dispensing Technology group expects them to be an acceptable alternative to the EFD Orange.

  • Wax Plugs: Recommended. Generally used by fluid formulators for packaging solder paste and pre-mixed epoxies.

    Not generally recommended:

  • EFD White (double wiper): Designed for use with a hand-operated plunger.

Exception: The EFD White plunger works for automated dispensing of very thin, low viscosity materials using the DV-01 syringe valve.

  • EFD Black Rubber: Designed for use with a hand-operated plunger, not generally recommended for automated dispensing applications.

  • Semco Yellow: Not generally recommended for automated fluid dispensing as they can lower flow rates with certain materials.

To ensure a proper fit, make sure your syringe and follower are made by the same manufacturer.
